Garden Book Entry - July 17, 2023
Notes
Our Whippersnapper Peas, Rows 19 and 21, are starting to produce pods. I’ve never seen pods this long and this wide before. Maybe another week until they are ready to harvest.
Our Beefsteak Tomatoes, which are in buckets and in the shade because of the excessive heat, are producing many clusters and turning red but are smaller than expected. This may be because we did not water them as much as we should have when they were in the excessive heat. They are just a little bit bigger than Cherry Tomatoes.
Our potatoes are nearing the end of their life cycle. They should be ready to harvest in a week or so.
Also, the potatoes that we have already harvested to check progress were smaller than we expected. We think it is because we planted the potatoes out of season and the excessive heat caused the soil to have too high a temperature for tubers to produce.
Another 20 cucumbers were harvested today. We are just giving them away at this point. In the past few days, we have found worms burrowing in some of them; that’s to be expected at some point.
The kosher dill pickle recipe from the last article did not work. They became cloudy, and as my dad said, "They tasted like gas."
Since then, we have made another batch with another recipe, and it succeeded, along with the sweet pickle recipe we tried.
Our carrots in both the White Acre Pea beds, Rows 1–3, and the Cucumber beds, Rows 22–24, have not grown and are dying back. This would be considered one of our two failures so far this year. We learned that they should’ve been in a bed by themselves and not under a cover crop.
